AHLEM: Clarity and Craft in the Jura Mountains
In an industry often driven by speed and scale, AHLEM stands apart through a deliberate return to craft. Founded in 2014 by Paris-born designer Ahlem Manai-Platt, the brand is built on a philosophy of restraint. Design is distilled to its most essential form, and quality is measured not by volume, but by time. Inspired by travel and conceived in Los Angeles, each frame is then realised in France’s historic eyewear region of the Jura Mountains.
The Jura Mountains: A Legacy of Making
Located between Burgundy and the Swiss border, this rural landscape has long been defined by its material traditions. Once known for its “forest glass factories,” the region’s connection to glassmaking dates back to the early 17th century, supported by dense forests and abundant natural resources. Its metalworking heritage reaches even further, laying the groundwork for what would become a specialised industry. By the 18th and 19th centuries, eyeglass production had been industrialised in the commune of Morez, establishing the Jura as the centre of French optical craftsmanship.
To this day, the Jura Mountains are synonymous with precision and heritage. It’s here, in towns like Oyonnax, that AHLEM frames are brought to life by master artisans. Each pair passes through multiple specialised ateliers, handled by up to nine craftspeople, each responsible for a distinct stage of production. From cutting and polishing acetate to engraving, beveling, and hand-finishing, the process spans hundreds of meticulous steps; less like a production line, and more like coregraphy.
Design That Rejects the Seasonal Cycle
AHLEM’s design language is rooted in permanence. Drawing on early 20th-century Bauhaus principles, each frame is defined by clarity of line, balanced proportions, and a considered use of material. There is tension and variation within the details of AHLEM frames quiet tension in the details. Raw-cut acetate juxtaposed against polished surfaces, metal frames finished with subtle, hand-worked textures, AHLEM creates pieces with a unique point of difference designed to live well beyond the style trends of the time.
