Introduction

Garrett Leight, founder of Garrett Leight California Optical (GLCO), was born into the world of fashion eyewear. The son of Larry Leight — Founder and Creative Director of Oliver Peoples — Garrett grew up immersed in the optical industry, eventually working alongside his father.

 

In 2009, Garrett opened his first independent eyewear concept store in Venice Beach, California. Offering a curated selection of hand-picked frames, the store combined the expertise of licensed opticians with a relaxed, design-led approach. Delivering eyewear that was both functional and stylish, the stores success laid the foundation for something more personal.

 

Inspired by the lifestyle and community of Venice Beach, Garrett Leight began designing his own line of eyewear. In homage to his upbringing and the influences that shaped him, Garrett Leight California Optical was born from a vision of wearable, versatile frames that balance classic style with a contemporary West Coast sensibility.

Key Features

Garrett Leight California Optical (GLCO) glasses are designed in Los Angeles and, as of 2025, are handcrafted in Japan. Widely regarded as the pinnacle of eyewear manufacturing,  Japanese production brings an exceptional level of precision and finish, where Garrett Leight’s generational knowledge is realised at the highest global standard. Frames are crafted from premium components sourced from esteemed material suppliers, including cured acetate in colourways developed exclusively for GLCO.

 

GLCO continues to evolve its modern approach to eyewear, refining classic silhouettes through considered proportions and tailored detailing. Conceived in the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles, each design draws on the peoples, places, and cultural narratives of California. Many styles are also informed by the movies, music, and fashion from the 80s and 90s, reimagining archival shapes and details for the contemporary present.

 

Equally central to the brand’s philosophy is lightweight wearability and comfort. Frames are designed to feel effortless on the face, reflecting the relaxed, outdoors-oriented Californian lifestyle that underpins GLCO’s ethos.
